Is what I'm eating good for a low carb diet?
I'm 5'3 and 47 kg, which is around 105 lb I think?
I'm on a low carb diet in order to tone up and lose a few pounds.
For breakfast I have;
One thick slice of whole grain bread (toasted)
One egg white
For break (at school):
One small cup of skimmed milk cappucino with 0 calorie sweetener and cinnamon
2 cups of water
For lunch:
Raw broccoli, cucumber, carrots and lettuce.
Chicken breast meat (without skin)
A bit of tofu and sometimes a tomato soup.
For dinner:
Raw broccoli and mushrooms
A small serving of lean chicken breast
More tofu and a cup of tea
I'm eating around under 1000 calories a day
Answer on Is what I'm eating good for a low carb diet?
A low carb diet should never be a low calorie or a low fat diet.
Carbs are used for fuel, when you lower carbs, you have to replace those calories with an alternate fuel source which is dietary fats. Protein should never be used as a primary fuel source.
Your basal metabolic rate is how many calories your body uses in a sleep state - if you lower calories, you lower your basal metabolic rate (if you raise calories, you raise your basal metabolic rate).
There is NO evidence to substantiate the calorie theory. It may sound logical, but the body is built for survival & does not follow logical mathematical equations.
Exercise increases our caloric needs. If your caloric needs are higher than your caloric intake, the body will catabolize it's own lean tissues for nutrition (including vital organs, like the heart), there is no nutrition in fat stores, only energy. Without sufficient calorie intake, lean tissues become an unnecessary caloric drain & the body releases them & protects fat stores. Lean tissues use a lot of calories but fat tissues require very few calories to maintain.
As long as you have <9grams carbs per hour, you will maintain insulin control & shouldn't gain weight, no matter the calories because insulin, the fat storage hormone is not activated.
Gary Taubes spent 7 years going over all the studies on nutrition, which is the basis of his recent book "Good calories, Bad calories"
He makes a case based on substantiated scientific studies that -
> Obesity is a disorder of excess fat accumulation, not overeating & not sedentary behaviour.
> Consuming excess calories does not cause us to grow fatter, any more than it causes a child to grow taller.
Excess protein will be converted to glucose (whether you are in glycolysis or ketosis) *unless* your fat ratio is greater than 80% of total calories.
It's been impossible to study high calorie low carb, since protein is fairly self regulating and low carb creates a natural appetite suppression. The highest study I've found is 2600 calories. In one discussion group, the calorie theory was under discussion & one lean fellow experimented on himself & added an extra 2000 calories a day to his normal maintenance level of 2500 calories for a total of 4500 calories a day - an extra 14,000 calories in a week - which according to the calorie theory should add 4# but he lost 1#
Fat won't make you fat (but a low fat, high carb diet can). Fat is essential to good health. (not including transfats) & supports a strong immune system & helps hormones to function properly. Fat tempers the devastating health effects of carbohydrates. Fat is needed to make the vitamins & minerals in your foods (like calcium & vit.D in milk or alpha and beta carotene and lycopene in vegs) bioavailable so they can be incorporated into the body structure. Most people do better with a higher level of fat than with less, even if the body is being fueled by carbs & not fat.
The body can not release body fat stores until the bloodstream is clear of insulin. Carbs greater than 9grams per hour trigger insulin. Insulin is the only fat storage hormone.
I am adamantly opposed to low calorie dieting because most people lose a good portion of lean tissue (including vital organs like the heart) along with fat stores. Low calories convert dietary protein to a very inefficient fuel, forcing the body to catabolize it's own lean tissues for nutrition. There is no nutrition in fat stores, only energy.
Low calories slow the metabolism to function on fewer calories. Most people get impatient and lower their calories and increase their exercise to a point where they lose so much lean tissue that when they return to what was maintenance level eating they are now accumulating more fat stores because their caloric needs have dropped due to the loss of this tissue and it becomes a vicious cycle of dieting and more loss (including vital organs like the heart) This stress cannot be healthy.

Need tips about becoming vegetarian...?
I am going vegetarian! I am making my grocery list and I need help. Okay so every week my boyfriend gives me 100-120 bucks to get all the food we need for the week(its our grocery budget). I have to buy enough to feed my 2 kids and me and him. He eats meat and loves junk food, I am choosing to become vegetarian and not eat junk food/meat. I also am changing my kid's diet to vegetarian as well since it is a much healthier lifestyle. They are young (ages 3&5) and they don't really like meat anyway so it shouldn't be a big deal for them. Anyway my problem is trying to balance what to get their dad and us. I actually think it will be better because not buying meat will cut cost quite a bit. Meat is expensive! I tried to tell him if he just went vegetarian we'd save more money which he always is trying to do lol but he wasn't having it. So any tips would be great, some good websites with some great recipes, or maybe give me a sample grocery list of things to make sure to get. I think he will just be happy if I get him some pizzas and chips lol. Oh, I also was wondering if anyone could tell me how soy burgers and veggie burgers taste? Do they sell them at walmart or do I have to go to a grocery store? What types of food should i have every day and how much protein do I need? What are your thoughts about fish, too. I am considering keeping fish in my diet.
Thanks! :))
BTW i always give 5 full stars to best answer!
Answer on Need tips about becoming vegetarian...?
The books I use are, Diet for a Small Planet and Recipes for a Small Planet. It explains how to combine your vegetarian foods to get the right combination of essential amino acids that make a complete protein. I love fish, I believe it helps maintain a healthy body weight.
You can design your diet any way that suits you, You don't need a title to define yourself.
I believe with all healthy eating habits the first thing is to cut out junk/fast food. Taking the time to prepare healthy recipes, keeps your goals in focus.
Thanks! :))

What od you think of the Jersey shore kids doing a season in Italy?
I've never watched the show- and from what I have seen the kids strike me as idiots.
I am currently enrolled in Italian at the local community college. My professor who is from Naples states Italians love to make fun of folks like the Jersey shore kids as they are a bunch of idiots.
I might watch this season if the kids are getting their butts kicked and ridiculed by real Italians.
Answer on What od you think of the Jersey shore kids doing a season in Italy?
They wouldn't last a week.

I am 51 and recently I have been waking up every morning with"pins and needles in my hands .?
am wondering if there is something missing in my diet?
Answer on I am 51 and recently I have been waking up every morning with"pins and needles in my hands .?
It can sometimes be caused by abnormal levels of calcium, potassium, or sodium in your body, but there are many possible causes of tingling or pins and needles:
Remaining in the same seated or standing position for a long time
Injury to a nerve -- for example, a neck injury may cause you to feel numbness anywhere along your arm or hand, while a low back injury can cause numbness or tingling down the back of your leg
Pressure on the spinal nerves, such as from a herniated disk
Pressure on peripheral nerves from enlarged blood vessels, tumors, scar tissue, or infection
Shingles or herpes zoster infection
Lack of blood supply to an area -- for example, cholesterol (plaque) build up from atherosclerosis in the legs can cause pain, numbness, and tingling while walking (this is called vascular claudication); frostbite can also reduce blood supply and lead to numbness
Other medical conditions, including:
Carpal tunnel syndrome (pressure on a nerve at the wrist)
Diabetes
Migraines
Multiple sclerosis
Seizures
Stroke
Transient ischemic attack (TIA), sometimes called a "mini-stroke"
Underactive thyroid
Raynaud's phenomenon
Abnormal levels of calcium, potassium, or sodium in your body
A lack of vitamin B12 or other vitamin
Use of certain medications
Toxic nerve damage due to lead, alcohol, or tobacco
Radiation therapy
